Paddle with River Spirit

Membership is open to all adult women. Dragon boating appeals to paddlers of all ages, it’s one of the easiest sports to get into, and it requires no special skill — River Spirit has veteran paddlers in their 70s who still enjoy the sport and do well in competitions.

From day one, new paddlers are shown good technique by being paired with experienced dragon boaters. The whole team supports one another, and no one needs to worry about getting left behind.

How it works

A dragon boat carries a crew of paddlers seated in pairs, a drummer at the front who keeps the rhythm, and a steersperson at the back. Paddling efficiently takes practice — the team that makes paddling look effortless with a continuous, fluid motion usually wins the race.

It’s a total-body workout that builds strength while having little impact on the joints. And teamwork is number one: there are no MVP awards.

What experience do I need to join?

Absolutely none!

Can I try paddling before I commit?

Yes. Contact our membership associate and she can arrange this for you.

What equipment will I need? Do I have to buy it?

Paddles and PFDs are supplied to each member upon joining the team. Some members buy their own paddles. Paddling gloves are useful, especially on cooler days in spring and fall. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes you aren’t afraid of getting a little wet.

Is there a minimum or maximum age?

We don’t usually take junior paddlers (under 19) as full members, though we do allow them on the boat as guest paddlers. There is no maximum age — we welcome all adult paddlers who would like to give dragon boating a try.

Will it cost me a lot of money?

There’s a membership fee of $100 and a uniform deposit of $25, payable upon joining the team. Other expenses can come up if you take part in dragon boat festivals, but participation is entirely optional. The team subsidizes some festivals; others are paid for by the paddlers themselves.

Do I have to be a “super athlete”?

We accept all fitness levels. But be warned! Much to your surprise, you may end up becoming a “super athlete”.

Can I paddle if I have a physical disability?

Provided your disability does not create a safety issue for the boat or other team members, there’s no reason you can’t take an active part in paddling.

Is there off-season training?

Team members are encouraged to maintain their fitness in the off season. The team has a weekly fitness session on a pay-as-you-go basis.

How long is the season?

The training season runs from late February to early November. The boat is taken out of the water in late fall, and we’re back paddling in early spring, weather permitting.

Do we paddle in all weather?

We don’t paddle when conditions are likely to be hazardous — for instance during a small craft wind warning or an electrical storm. The decision not to paddle is made jointly by our coach and team captain.

What if I can’t make a practice?

Not a problem! We just ask that you tell the team captain ahead of time, since rearranging the roster and bench order at the last minute can be a nuisance. We prefer at least twelve paddlers in the boat for a practice.

How many races and events does River Spirit take part in?

A decision is made early in the year by a show of interest from members. We often attend five or six festivals. We’re also active in the community at events such as Relay for Life, the Terry Fox Run and Tour de Rock. Your participation in any race or event is entirely up to you.

What other commitments are there?

We simply ask that you take part in some way during our fundraisers, and that you uphold the policies and code of conduct set out in our Paddler’s Handbook.

Can family and friends try paddling?

Permission needs to be granted by the captain and waivers must be signed. Paddlers must be 10 years old or older, and children must have waivers signed by their parents.

Practices and equipment

Where and when we paddle

[PLACEHOLDER – confirm the current practice schedule and locations. Details below are from the Paddler’s Handbook.]

Where

The Campbell River estuary. We leave from the Tyee Dock early in the season, then the Freshwater Marina for the rest of the season.

Tyee Dock: from the North Island Highway, turn onto Spit Road and follow it down to the parking lot on the left.

Freshwater Marina: from the North Island Highway, turn onto Baikie Road, then make an immediate right into the marina parking lot. Please park on the grass beside the lot or behind the marina office — it’s a working dock.

When

Tuesday evenings: meet at 5:00 pm, on the water by 5:30.

Saturday mornings: meet at 8:30 am, on the water by 9:00.

Thursdays are usually reserved for paddlers heading to an upcoming race.

Practices last 60 to 75 minutes and are rescheduled when the tide is too low. Please be punctual — resetting bench orders at the last minute can be tricky.

What you’ll need

PFD: River Spirit provides each member with a Transport Canada–certified life jacket. It must be worn at all times on the water.

Paddle: the club provides an IDBF-standard wooden paddle, and the coach will fit you with the right length.

Clothing: dress for the weather in clothes that move and breathe. You may get splashed, so bring a change of clothes. Gloves are a personal choice.

Volunteer

Lend a hand

River Spirit couldn’t do what it does without volunteers. Every year, volunteers help make Race the River a success — and the team is active across Campbell River at events such as Relay for Life, the Terry Fox Run and Tour de Rock, taking every opportunity to promote breast cancer awareness.

We also hold a major fundraiser each year, which may include live and silent auctions. If you’d like to help, we’d love to hear from you.

Bring your group paddling

River Spirit welcomes anyone interested in experiencing what it’s like to paddle a dragon boat. If you have a small group of between six and twenty people, we can give you the chance to enjoy some good-natured competition and develop new skills. It’s ideal for:

  • Corporate and business groups
  • Team building
  • Youth and school groups
  • Family celebrations
